Top 5 Reasons to Attend an HBCU
Can your child picture Grambling State's marching band, Morehouse's stepping teams, or
Spelman's Alpha Kappa Alpha's pink and green spirit-wear? Well, imagine them going to a college
where almost everyone is Black. There are over 100 of them from which to choose!
There aren't the same concerns of attending an integrated college. Imagine them not having to
dumb down Black culture to make white people feel more comfortable. This isn't necessary at
HBCUs. As a matter of fact, embracing our culture is the big draw to them. One disadvantage is the
lack of diversity. However, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and the many schools that
are worth exploring! There are also scholarships available just for HBCU students.
Here are the names of some alumni just from Howard University: Vice President Kamala Harris,
Toni Morrison, former NYC Mayor David Dinkins, Phylicia Rhashad, Debbie Allen, Stokely
Carmichael, Zora Neale Hurston, Chadwick Boseman, Sean "Diddy" Combs, and the list goes on!
